IE4 motor advantages and applications
IE4 is the highest energy efficiency rating as per IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission). The IEC is a global, not-for-profit organization which sets International Standards that provide the technical framework allowing governments to build national quality infrastructure and companies to buy and sell consistently safe and reliable products across the world. According to The International Energy Agency (IEA), electric motor driven systems are responsible for nearly 53% of global electricity use. Hence the IEC has defined the energy-efficient electric motor systems through the internationally relevant test standard IEC 60034-2-1 and the IEC 60034-30-1 classification scheme comprising four levels of motor efficiency (“IE-code”) as under:
- IE1 Standard Efficiency
- IE2 High Efficiency
- IE3 Premium Efficiency
- IE4 Super Premium Efficiency
These IE-codes serve as a reference for governments and standards organisations who recognize the efficiency levels for their minimum energy performance standards (MEPS).
Among all these IE efficiency class motors, using IE4 motors ensures highest energy saving. Depending on the power rating and usage pattern it can be as high as 40% ensuring quick payback though the initial cost is little high compared to standard motor. Even replacing existing old generation, standard electric motors with Super Premium Efficiency IE4 motors is a sensible decision for several reasons. It ensures quick pay-back, as fast as 1.5 to 2 years in certain cases. Energy saving achieved thereafter reduces your operational costs or indirectly adds to your profit. Besides this, lower energy consumption means reduced carbon footprint. Every nation today is facing the challenges of energy crisis on one hand and climate change on the other. The only way out in such a situation is to keep the energy consumption to a minimum. Considering the urgency to curb the pollution, governments across the world are implementing strict measures including mandating use of energy efficient motors. From 1st July 2023, IEC has recommended use of motors between 75 kW and 200 kW to meet the higher efficiency class of IE4.
IE4 Super Premium Efficiency motors find applications practically everywhere where electric motors are to be used. These motors are available in different power ratings and frame sizes. Several manufacturers specialise in offering a limited narrow range since these motors require design expertise and a highly advanced test set-up demanding high capital expenditure. However, few companies like LHP Motors provide a complete range of LT motors from 0.09 kW to 1000 kW, up to 450 frame and 690 V. Now-a-days, IE4 motors are being extensively used for almost all the applications including fan, blower, pump and compressor applications where significant energy saving can be achieved. IE2, IE3 & IE4 Motors can also be used for specialised applications such as Flameproof, Smoke Extraction, Textile, Crane & Hoist duty, Fire Engine, Roller Table, Inverter duty, Encoder mounted/suitable, Railway auxiliary, Multispeed, Cooling tower, Brake-mounted and Gear motors of different types and so on.
